What is Hashing?
Definitely Not a Cult

So What Happens at a Hash?
A “hash” is a sporting event based on the old English game of “hare and hounds.” The “hare” sets the trail using hash “marks” and the “hounds” attempt to follow. Trail may take you on city streets, up hills and down valleys, parks, actual trails, and any other variety of “shiggy” as you make your way from stop to stop. Stops may be very brief, where a “mark” (explained at opening “circle”) instructs you on which direction to go, which action to take before proceeding, etc… or may be longer at a cleverly placed cooler or a fine local establishment. Each event usually has some sort of theme, but not always. These are +21 events, since there are bawdy songs and alcoholic beverages, but NA options are ALWAYS included. CONSENT is mandatory. Run OR walk. Drink as much OR as little as is right for you. Do the silly ass slap at a “naughty stop” or just give a high five. Answer whatever “NFN” questions you are comfortable with (we like to get to know everyone) or plead the Fifth! The hash is about entertainment, not hazing.
Hashing 101
The very basic order of events at any hash is as follows:
- Pre-lube (socializing before opening circle)
- Opening “circle” (introductions, “chalk talk”, “hares” blessed).
- “On-Out” on trail
- “Run” trail following marks from stop to stop
- “On-In” from trail
- Closing “circle” (“accusations”, “down-downs”, news, closing song)
- “On-after” (Socializing at the location of closing circle or moving on to another location nearby)
